I am installing my third gentoo system on a compaq presario laptop (2100 series). After hitting a few roadblocks, I have gotten the main system installed and am working my way through the xfree installation. X will run without xfs just fine BUT when I try to get it to work with xfs it has some problems. Checking the log files after starting xfs I find this
Quote: | xfs: cannot establish any listening sockets |
As far as my configuration, I have double checked everything several times and it is the same as the other two machines I have set up (both are desktop machines). I have commented out the "nolisten = tcp" line and tried it both ways. I have also tried the default setup of using -1 as the port number as well as using 7100 specifically. Nothing has helped so far. Any ideas?
thanks for any help you may have ... |

Ok I think I have fixed the problem. Somehow (probably a big (L)user error!) the /tmp directory did not have the sticky bit set so the socket could not be created. I toggled the bit and it worked fine. So if you ever get this message in your log file from xfs and don't know why check the permissions on /tmp. Ok back to work ...
I do not understand why the sticky bit was not set during the install though ...? It is fine on the other two machines. |
