In the interest of best practices and security, I would like to avoid unnecessary devices and such created by the kernel. Whenever I am in menuconfig and fiddling with settings, I do recall places where I am supposed to decide how many devices of one sort or another should be created, such as loopback devices, raw devices, etc.. However, I do not recall getting asked, or at least I never noticed it, where I should decide how many tty devices I want. Yet, when I do the command 'ls /dev', I can sure enough see a boatload of them, and there are more of them than anything else in there.
So, in order to keep to my word about putting things in order and buttoned down, I was wondering whether I might be remiss in this regard? Do I need umpteen tty's, are they consuming memory, do they decrease security, and so on...? Any musings along these lines would be welcome, as usual. Thanks. |
