|
|
Hi,
I was messing around with File Association in Control Mode and I wanted to make a new entry to play audio files with the extension .asx
It did not work, and I deleted the entry.
Now everytime I open conqueror or kmail I received this message
Code: |
Could not find mime type
application/octet-stream
|
Do you have any idea why I am getting this?
Can you check in the File Association for an entry ?
Thank you |

I found the solution.
I had to create an empty mime type with the name octet-stream in the sectioin application. |

I have tried to create a new mime type of octet-stream.desktop in ~.kde/share/mimelnk/application but this did not work. I then tried to insert
[Desktop Entry]
Hidden=true
MimeType=application/octet-stream
Type=MimeType
But this didn't seem to work either. Did I do this correctly?
Right now this is just causing kbudget and kmymoney2 to crash but I am afraid that this is going to start to snowball.
Please help. I would like to start using these programs. _________________ Thanks,

Okay, here is what I found out on my own. I went to the following url which
explains the extension types for all the mime-types (at least a partial
list).
http://www.duke.edu/websrv/file-extensions.html
I sifted through all the entries and added the file extentions that they
included in the following manner.
Open "Control Center" select "File Associations" click the "application" group
of the tree and make sure the octet-stream is not included. Click the
"Add..." button and change group to "application". Now select the
"octet-stream" entry and add the following file extentions.
*.bin
*.class
*.dms
*.exe
*.lha
*.lzh
I also put "octet-stream" in the Description text box and did not add any
applictions to the "Application Preference Order" area (I would bet that you
should not add any preferred applications as this might mess stuff up even
further.).
I have not tried this with multiple users yet so I am not sure if you have to
do this for everybody. I have also noticed that I am not given the option to
remove this mime-type (the "Remove.." button next to the "Add..." button
remains disabled) now that I have included it. If somebody can tell me why
or in what file that this information is stored (as I have not found any
reference to it) it would be much appreciated.
I hope this helps somebody later as I could find very little on this
information.
Thanks,

I had the same problem but your solution didn't work for me.
My problem was that I had a mixture of kde-3.4.3 and kde-3.5 packages
(maybe because my /etc/rc.conf was still set to kde-3.4.3)
I changed my /etc/rc.conf and ran the following command to remove all kde-3.4.3 packages (they all had 3.5 version aswell)
for i in $(grep kde-base /etc/portage/package.keywords | cut -d" " -f 1 ); do sudo emerge -C "=$i"-3.4.3; done
This worked a treat and my kde is prettier to boot 'cause i had been running the old version even though I had the new one installed.
Hope this helps someone else with the octet-stream problem if the previous post doesn't work.
Cheers,

Cool. Same problem with me (added *.aup entry for Audacity projects, then started getting the error) and replacing the application/octet-stream entry fixed it. Cheers
Should we file a bug about this, though? _________________ Ryzen 5600x; Asus TUF Gaming B550-Plus; Geforce 1660 Super

Thanks cutaway! I created octet-stream with only bin and dms, since class belonged to java, exe belonged to Crossover Office, and the two compressed formats were also claimed. But this solved my problem.
I tried running kbuildsycoca first. It generated lots of warnings, but didn't seem to solve anything.
Thanks again for posting this solution. |
