For years, the only reason I've kept running GNOME has been that I like a couple of the dock apps (the system load monitor, the clock...). I always replace their latest preferred window manager with something else -- blackbox, fvwm, now playing with openbox and liking it fine.
The update to GNOME 3.x has totally hosed my setup; won't run at all on my system and crashes my whole desktop session with no message why. Rather than hunt down the remnants of GNOME 2 that are probably causing this, or otherwise put days into fixing the trouble, I've decided to make a go without it.
I've found conky. I like it. That takes care of the system monitor aspects for now. That leaves a decent dock.
I had high hopes for docky, but '/usr/bin/docky' crashes on my system claiming that dbus is missing. (dbus is running.) Well fine. The googles show me lots of alternatives and a few even mention compatibility with openbox, but as you can probably tell I'm getting tired of poking around and I'd like to hear success stories from others.
What I'm hoping for in my new favorite dock:- A place to stash minimized windows;
- A decent clock (bells, whistles not required, just show me at a glance what damn day and time it is);
- Maybe a weather notice. I live in Chicago.
- Compatibility with blackbox descendants like openbox, so, a place to put a desktop switcher.
One possible hitch: My desktop is always parked inside a VNC session, and more often than not I view it remotely, so applications that want to use shiny video functions or otherwise clog a network will pose a problem.
Seems like I don't want much. Except that wanting a lot from a little is wanting a lot. |

Yeah, I was in the same situation as you. I used xmonad in a gnome session.
I switched to xmonad in a kde session and I'm surprisingly liking it  a lot lighter than I expected, not that long to build (less than an hour if I'm not mistaken).
Before switching to kde, I used a standalone xmonad with lxpanel for tray and simple widgets. |
