When trying to emerge kde or gnome i keep getting an error message resulting in a termination of the emerge-proces.

Heres the errormessage:

!!! ERROR: dev-libs/libxml2-2.5.11 failed
!!! Function src_compile, Line 34, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

Any ideas on what to do???

could you post the lines above that?
that would help figure out what is going wrong.

I had similar problems a while ago and tried

Code:
emerge -D kde

The -D seems to make him check more thoroughly what and how to emerge.

Hope this helps!

hmmm, after a couple of tries with kde, kdebase, and just libxml2 i always get the same result... . its this libxml2 that just won't (i tried with the -D on libxml2 alone too of course) i probably messed up something somewhere in the previous steps of installation.. . . .. i might just restart the whole install, and maybe not start off form a stage 1 (of course i'd prefer understanding why and maybe not have to take another week to get the computer up and running)... i'm too much of a n00b i guess.. .

thanks

try re-emerging gcc first
then emerge kde or gnome

i've had several compile-errors that i could just solve by re-emerging gcc
(openoffice,guile,...)

i did happen to do that earlier, i did 'emerge gcc' and was surprised to see it go and install (gcc-3.2.3-r2). .... however that didn't solve much for me.. . . ..

thx.. .

\o/

i just took out a "-03" flag that i had in my make.conf, here is the before (#) and after :

#CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -03 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

i did notice that it was complaining about about an unreconized flag whenever i'd merge something but it would still work (untill this of course). plus the "-03" flag was by default there and also here :
http://www.freehackers.org/gentoo/gccflags/flag_gcc3.html and this would be my proc : K6-2 (AMD)

anyway, i am now and finally merging kdebase. ...

*g* Then it was just the old O-Flag mistake? I was also wondering a while about this, until if found out: It is -O3, no -03 (it isn't a zero but an O).
