So I just installed Gentoo as a dual boot with Archlinux and after missing my SATA driver in the kernel and recompiling then rebooting Gentoo shows my first and only hard drive as SDF.
In Archlinux it's still listed as SDA and nothing odd happens under Arch. Also if I insert a USB drive or sd card into the computer the hard drive name changes and is at the bottom of the list. For example, I insert a USB drive and it becomes SDF and then my first hard drive becomes SDG. Gentoo doesn't complain about fstab or anything else except for kernel panic at boot up if I don't have the right SDx set as root in grub.cfg.
I have a separate boot partition and a separate root partition for Gentoo and Grub2 is from Gentoo.
What would cause this sort of behaviour? Any help is really appreciated. |

My guess would be the hardware driver used, perhaps a generic sata driver versus a specific sata driver? Or perhaps you have a USB reader with no media inserted, and it's for some reason enumerating before the sata disk on your new kernel?
Weird though, they should be the same....
Might want to get the kernel config for Arch and compare it with the one you generated. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
