I want to make all the big package as binary file so that my slow laptop can update fastly. but I can not emerge the binary version of chromium. i.e.,

Code:
ae429-3777  # emerge -av  www-client/chromium-bin

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "www-client/chromium-bin".

emerge: searching for similar names...
emerge: Maybe you meant any of these: www-client/chromium, www-client/firefox-bin, www-client/rekonq?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? thanks!

Chromium is open source, Chrome is binary.

So you mean if we emerge **google-chrome **, then we are using the binary version?
I found there is a package called google-chrome

diablo465,

That is indeed what it means, kind of.

With Chrome, you get whatever Google added to Chromium. What exactly the differences are, you might want to research yourself (I never cared too much, since those browsers are certainly not for me).

Generally things such as tracking and privacy are probably the bits that are most mentioned, but I believe there is more.

So given the new direction Chrome is taking (deliberate knee-capping of cookie management for one) I'm a little surprised to see that we don't have a chromium-bin ebuild. The more Chrome veers off in the direction of being a browser designed to sell its users to advertisers, the greater the difference becomes between Chrome and chromium, and given that a browser is perhaps the application that is most essential to keep updated, and given that chromium takes a small eternity to build, it would seem to be a well-received addition to portage.

There is firefox-bin of course, but the new dependency on pulseaudio makes that unsuitable for those of us who fought hard to get ALSA to work (and who want audio passthrough to continue to work elsewhere in the system.)

Must be a good reason, can anybody share what it is?

Usually, the reason is that there is no one who has the time, the resources, the expertise, and the motivation to make it happen. You seem to have the motivation, which is good. If you can spare the time, the other two are comparatively easy for you to acquire on the job. Are you interested in making this happen?

Ok.

So this is maybe the wrong way of doing it, but then I'd like put together a brave ebuild as well. It should be a good leveraging of effort since the brave browser is based off chromium. Criticisms, please, if this is stupid, say so now. :)

I see neither browser on the overlays page. Is the right way of doing this creating my own overlay and then when someone like you deems it worthy it gets promoted to the main tree?

I will spend the rest of the day reviewing the ebuild stuff and looking at firefox and firefox-bin to what is going on here and post my questions then.

Many ebuilds available. No, Gentoo team won't scout overlays for certain packages. You can offer your ebuild in bugs.gentoo.org and become a proxy-maintainer for it, if you want it to hit main tree. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Proxy_Maintainers Here's more info about that.

Minor point - I'm not the person you need to convince to add it to any particular tree or overlay. I help keep the forums clean, but I don't have a hand in deciding what packages are available. For that, you need to get the interest of a Gentoo developer.
