Hello,
I don't want to bother you, but i really don't knox what to do, i got a Ati Radeon 9700 pro with a KT400 (AhtlonXP)

I read somewhere, i have to enable agpgart in kernel and emerge xfree-drm, but when i try 'insmod agpgart' it returns me "init_module : Invalid argument"

Somewhere else, i found someone who only enable agp in kernel, and replace agpgart with agp in ati driver, so how can i do that ???

If someone who got the same hardware can tell me what i have to do, it will be very great for me.

Thanks for all.

i've been trying to help a friend of mine with the same problem... we've tried several kernels (2.4 series) but it didn't work... the only way it works atm is a 2.6 kernel with agpgart compiled as module... NO xfree-drm, NO dri or drm in the kernel and ati-drivers above 3.2.5...
the kt400 chipset is still not supported correctly in the 2.4 kernels... sorry

The 2.6 kernels are more than stable enough for everyday use, don't be worried about using one. There's lots of information available on the forums about upgrading.

I'm sure I remember a few people who have gotten KT400's working properly on 2.4 kernels, but they seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

You should really make a new config for your 2.6 kernel. Lots of stuff has changed since 2.4, so using a 2.4 config will almost certainly cause problems. Delete your /usr/src/linux-beta/.config file and run make menuconfig again to get a new config.

Ok... i'm glad to announce... I've finally found a solution for most users with 2.4 kernels...

read the post from linuxnoob10k here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38634&perpage=15&pagenumber=4

this workaround works with ac-sources... haven't tested it with other sources...

Good luck (it worked for a friend of mine, so i'm sure it will do for others too =) )

That looks promising, but because the ebuild takes care of building the module for you, it's not possible to edit the file directly with Gentoo. You could make a little patch that the ebuild could apply, or you could pause it with CTRL-Z after it's done unpacking, edit the file under /var/tmp/portage/ati-drivers-3.2.8/work, then restart it with "fg".
