[SOLVED]BOOTING ERROR: 'UDEV failed to start'-frozen machine

Hi,

After emerge --sync and trying to emerge world - at the moment not yet running -
suddenly I have booting problem: During the booting stage I get ERROR message: 'UDEV failed to start'
and when the DE's login screen is showing up, it is frozen and keyboard and mouse not active.

I think the largest reason for udev failing to start is having a kernel that doesn't have the required options built into it... however there can be other reasons. A screen cap of the boot process would be useful...

How much of a world update did you do? must be fairly significant...

Did you also update kernel?

No - I did not change anything regarding kernel configuration before this problem suddenly appeared.

Could you take a picture with a digital camera of the errors that show up before the GUI?

Also, should try to stop the machine from getting into the GUI, setting softlevel=single should do this for openrc, or systemd.unit=rescue for systemd.

Other possible problems that could hold up your keyboard (though I thought this should be fixed by now) is upgrading your X server but not recompiling your xf86-input drivers.

Dear eccerr0r,

Sorry for not updating my status: Meanwhile I used the DOK of the installation to chroot into the system,
and finally succeeded to run 'emerge world' that fixed that problem and a lot others. However your tips are helpful for others and for mine next time...
