hi,
i got the orinoco gold wlan pcmcia card. I have a running gentoo installtion on my laptop with genkernel and hotplug. if i put the card into the pcmcia slot nothing happens.
I tried:
modprobe pcmcica_core
modprobe orinoco
modprobe hermes
but after none of that commands the card did work.
If i do "cardctl ident" i get the following error message: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices.
I started at boot /etc/init.d/hotplug.
Can anybody help me?
Thanx

You need the specific driver for your pcmcia hardware (the laptop hardware, not the card). I use i82365 (for hp pavilion). I think yenta_socket is another commonly use driver. |

This won't solve your problem, but for reference: if you have the same ORiNOCO Gold card that I have (802.11a/b/g), the chipset might be an Atheros chipset. There is a driver under development that currently works, and it is in portage. It is called "madwifi" and it is masked.
I was given the same error you were until I loaded the yenta_socket module into the kernel. After that, I loaded the ath_pci module (the Atheros chipset module) and it now works. _________________ Help save the world. Adopt an unanswered post.
