PostPosted: Fri Oct 24, 2003 8:08 pm    Post subject: Radeon and X config [SOLVED] Reply with quote

I'm sorry, I realize this has probably been posted before, but I'm finding it terribly difficult to navigate around in Lynx. Here's my problem:

I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro and have emerged "ati-drivers". At the tail end of the emerge, it suggested I run "fglrxconfig" to create a XFree86config-4 (sp?) file. I have no such program and can't seem to emerge it. Is there any help on this? (I just finished compiling KDE after about 10 hours of straight compiles...)

Well... That is rather seriously odd... I decided to try to emerge "ati-drivers" again, and now I have the fglrxconfig utility. Please disregard the above :)

ARGH!! OK, I've now run the fglrxconfig program and upon running "startx", I get the following error:

(I can't cut & paste in this console environment, so bear with me)
Using vt 7(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:05:0
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Is there a solution to this or am I only going to be using the console?

EDIT: OK, I've got a temporary solution up... My Radeon 9800 Pro is now using the "vesa" driver, and now X starts. In fact, I'm writing this from KDE.

I'd like to be able to use the radeon's drivers, though... Vesa's not much fun for OGL development

Is that right? Can you post the output of "lspci" and "dmesg"?

OK, I found it after I emerged it the second time too... after using it, though, it made an XFree86config-4 file that didn't work... acted like it couldn't find a supported card, I think

OK, that ID is correct, it just looked a bit unusual :)

From your dmesg:
Code:
[drm] AGP 0.99 on AMD Irongate @ 0xd8000000 128MB
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.1.1 20010405 on minor 0

This means you have DRM support in your kernel, which will prevent the ATI driver from working. Recompile your kernel with no DRM support at all, and compile AGP support as a module. Once you've done that, emerge the drivers again, then do "modprobe agpgart" followed by "modprobe fglrx". Then run "fglrxconfig" again and see what happens. If it doesn't work, post your XFree logfile (/var/log/XFree86.0.log).

Argh... same results, but here's the new stuff (dmesg again):

EDIT: ARGH... both my office and home are having trouble with the forum :(. I hit submit and five minutes later it's still at the "post" screen with the browser still trying to work - hence the double posts. I've removed this double-post...

Some things to try:
- use the latest drivers - from your dmesg output you seem to be using 2.9.12. The newest version is currently 3.2.8 - do
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge ati-drivers
to get them (re-run fglrxconfig afterwards, it'll add some new options).
- change this line in your XF86Config:
Code:
#    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"    # no device found at config time

to
Code:
    BusID "PCI:1:5:0"

OK, did that - I am now running on 3.2.8 drivers.

After running the config command, it found the card this time... that line was already set to that value. However, running startx gave me the same results as before. Here's the new XFConfig-4 file's contents (before I changed back to vesa to post here):

Are we on the right track here? Is there something else I need to worry about in the kernel? Is there a way to post my current kernel options here to double check that I don't have any truly bizarre conditions happening? This thing's got me stumped . Thanks for the help so far... maybe there's a solution yet!

The file "/usr/src/linux/.config" contains your current kernel settings. Can you post your current dmesg output again? (from after the fglrx module is loaded)

Your dmesg output looks fine, and I don't see any problems with your kernel config either. Are you still getting the list of drivers in your XFree log? Does it make any difference if you set "UseInternalAGPGART" to "yes" in your XF86Config?

Yeah, it's still showing all the other drivers. Changing the flag on "UseInternalAGPGART" didn't seem to have any affect either. As this card is still a bit on the expensive side, has anyone else even tried it? If you've had success with this card, could you please post such - I suspect maybe the drivers simply aren't compatible with the 9800 pro yet...

It does definitely support the 9800 Pro, that's what I'm using. There are several other people on the forums who also have the same card. I don't have much time to post just now, I'll see if I can think of anything else later.

The log you posted is weird - it doesn't actually list the fglrx driver anywhere, so it's not even as if it tried to load the driver and then couldn't find any compatible devices. Can you check that the files are actually in the correct places? Try
Code:
find /usr/share/X11R6 -iname 'fglrx*'
and you should see a few files. I'm not on a Gentoo box at the moment so I can't check exactly where the files are.

X11R6 directory does not exist under share, but I found it under /usr/X11R6. Ran
Code:
find /usr/X11R6 -iname 'fglrx*'
, which gave
Code:
rich@basilisk app-office $ find /usr/X11R6 -iname 'fglrx*'
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.o
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/extensions/fglrx_gamma.h
rich@basilisk app-office $
Looks like they are there. If the card works with you then that means that obviously the drivers are supposed to work here... I'm stumped :(.

Anyways, just for giggles, I'll go ahead and put in a sym-link for /usr/share/X11R6 to work... I can't imagine that's the problem, but it can't hurt

I think I just gave you the wrong directory in the first place  It looks like the files are in the right places.

This is just a random suggestion, I have no idea if it'll make any difference, but try compiling a kernel without SMP support and see what happens.

You could also try a newer kernel. If you don't want to go for 2.6, try a 2.4.22 based version. If you want to give 2.6 a go, I can try to help with any problems you might run into.
