After emerge --clean rsync, emerge -u world stops with db-3.2.9 and, now, db-3.2.9-r1 consistently at the following steps:

[..]
cp -fp .libs/db_upgrade /var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/bin/db_upgrade
cp -fp .libs/db_verify /var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/bin/db_verify
Installing documentation: /var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs ...
/bin/cp: preserving permissions for `/var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs/api_c': Invalid argument
/bin/cp: preserving permissions for `/var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs/api_cxx': Invalid argument
/bin/cp: preserving permissions for `/var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs/api_java': Invalid argument
/bin/cp: preserving permissions for `/var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs/api_tcl': Invalid argument
[..]
/bin/cp: preserving permissions for `/var/tmp/portage/db-3.2.9-r1/image//usr/docs/utility': Invalid argument
make: *** [install_docs] Error 1

!!! (no error message)

!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-libs/db/db-3.2.9-r1.ebuild .

This is on an install from a month or so ago and which has been updated like this, successfully, before. Thanks for info.

A forum search for "preserving and permissions" turned up this. Is anybody in here using ACLs on XFS?

rac,

Thanks for the help. Following the path of lesser perceived potential cranial distress, I tried reverius42's method in that thread by putting a - in front of the acl in /etc/make.conf (I don't know what an acl is; ugh, my / is xfs), emerging fileutils, and emerge world has now flown past the former roadblock of db-3.2.9 :)
