I've had this problem before, but this one is different. If I open the properties for mail-notification and then go to the icon for the sound, and try to play what is there, no sound comes out. But the same files play just fine with play or aplay. The is being done in an xfce4 environment. Any ideas? Thanks,
Fred

I assume you are talking about Thunderbird.

Maybe simply try re-emerging Thunderbird.

I find that occasionally, after an update, I need to re-build an app, even though the automatic rebuild does not decide to.

Only recently, I had that problem with Amarok not refreshing RSS feeds, I ended up doing an entire 'emerge --emptytree amarok' to fix the problem.

Thanks for the thought. I would not have thought it had to do with Thunderbird since when I check for sound in mail notification itself, asking it to play the file it is supposed to play, it gives no sound, but playing that same file outside of mail-notification play just fine. That said, this sound just started working this morning! Must have been fixed by some recent update.
