...proxy.
Hello,
I have just set up a ftp server, using proftpd, on my gentoo box here at the university. Unfortunately, I'm made to understand that I'm behind a proxy server which serves as a gateway to the Internet.
The proxy server is controlled by the university, I have no access to it. I only know it's ip address. So, in a way, I am behind a LAN with a private ip.
Now people outside the LAN can not reach my server because they don't know my ip address(it's private). They only know the proxy's ip address and can only reach me through the proxy.
The problem: The proxy's ip address and my ip address are not the same, obviously. And since my server uses my ip address, the world cannot get access to it.
My question is how do I setup my ftp server so that the whole world can access it and not just the people within the LAN or behind the proxy. Directions to tutorials, or links are appreciated. As well as your suggestions. _________________ simple, sleek and sexy text editor for gnome

hum I think if you can't change some proxy's settings you could not make it redirect internet querys to your box. First only people on the same private LAN as you can go to your box if you have a private IP and not a public one (ie an IP known on the internet). And if you couldn't change proxy settings to redirect every connections to port 2121 (for example) to your box, people would never go to your box from external network (internet) |

So, in other words, since I don't have access to the proxy server, my ftp server can not be directly connected to the internet. So, I definately need access to the proxy server? _________________ simple, sleek and sexy text editor for gnome

I think it's pretty safe to assume that you're on a private ip address (in the form 192.168.x.x and a few others) - these ip addresses are specifically for use on a private lan, they cannot be used on the internet. You need to get the proxy server (actually it's probably a NAT server) to do destination address translation.
If you don't have access to the server then you're stuck.
Of course I could be wrong and you have been given an internet accessible address, but I doubt it.
HTH,
Andrew |
