Since my ESS Maestro 1 doesn't seem to work properly with ALSA,
I'm planning on buying a new soundcard.

Any suggestions for a pretty cheap and good soundcard, with good Linux support?

It'll mostly be used for games and listening to music.
I have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 in another computer, but many games have heavy problems with that one, so I don't like it.

Thanks in advice.

I've got no problems at all with my cheap (~20€) SoundBlaster 128. It's not exactly what I'd call a great soundcard, but it's completely sufficient for desktop sound, game audio and mp3 playback.

Installation was pretty straightforward:
Code:
ALSA_CARDS="ens1371" emerge alsa-driver

Anything with a emu chipset (I.E. Soundblasters) can support hardware mixing (meaning that you don't have to run a sound server such as Arts or Esound) Have a look here to see if your potential card is supported by ALSA

ALSA sucks IMHO...
But compared to what quality you can get with this soundcard with windows and linux I think linux is clear winner.
