rc7 has a bug with the external_amp option not working. At least it was so with me, and many other people. I installed the alsa-cvs manually for now. Maybe they patched the rc7 in the meanwhile...

odd i had the rear speakers working with the rc7, i dont remember the rc5's but for me the rc7's are the best sound for me (if i lower DAC )

oh and if you have 4 speakers, you need to lower the ADC too, ( i think one is for front and one is for back )

AFAIK DAC is Digital Analog Converter and ADC is Analog Digital Converter
DAC is important to listen mp3 (digital audio to analog speakers)
ADC is for recording music from a analog input signal

i had just 2 speakers with rc6 i have not tested with rc7
because of the miserable sound quality
i lowered the DAC and ADC anyway but there was no improvement..
i got no clear sound until i was somewhere half at the volume that was perfectly clear at rc5
btw what kind of soundcard are you using???
maybe rc7 is just bad for my hercules game theater xp 6.1

and has someone this card connected to a hi-fi system???
does it work well??? how did you connect it????

I have your same sound chipset, connected to a hi-fi system (2 speakers only, though). Sound quality quickly degrades when volumes are high, up to a noise-only right channel at max volume. Also, I can't find a way to keep the master volume fixed. Is it normal?

I most likey wrong about what ADC and DAC do, but i do lower my ADC and DAC and i get great sound, even with xmms and mp3s

by you say rc5 would let you go full ? if so i must try.

I have my system connected to a 100 w externl amp, And i can turn the vol up to where the speakers are almost poping and the sound still sounds fine

i have the same problem with pcm volume over 75 %
if i stay below 75% with pcm i can go up to 100 % with master volume
about fixing the master volume i don't know, never tried and no idea how to

alsa was working well with all games i tried.... with oss emulation.. or is it just a wrapper or something????

rc5 let me go up to full volume except pcm to 75%
but with rc7 i had even some cracks and ugly sound at master and pcm 50%
with rc7 i have to turn up the speakers full to get the same sound level as in windows with 25% of speaker volume

does rc5 do multy plexing ? because i refuze to use a sound server (arts, esd) i think from rc6 and up you can do stuff like play quake3 and mp3s at the same time, and you dont get your flash bogged down when playing mp3s (because flash thinks it needs /dev/dsp even if it is not going to play a sound)

Code:

multi plexing with rc5 is working if you play a mp3 (xmms alsa plugin) and starting q3 or playing a flash...
but if i play a flash and start q3 at same time q3 crashes
it looks like it supports only multi plexing for alsa apps

with rc7 flash and q3 together works well... (but it sound horrible even separated)
now i will test rc6 and post the result

I need help with getting my rear, center, and subwoofer to work on my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card in Gentoo, which utilises the same chipset. ;)

I have the same sound card with the same problem of lack of bass. Kindly let me know if you have found a solution to this problem. I'm using alsarc6. Does it improve with alsarc7?

Pull out the rear, center and subwoofer cables from your speakerset, works for me :-) No real 5.1, I know but the channels are often just duplicated anyway :-) Note that you need a speakerset that supports this ;-)

You _can_ use the rear channels if you tell the application playing the sound that it needs to use the "second" soundcard, emulated by the driver, like this:
Code:
aplay -Dhw:0,1 something.wav

Note that for this you need to unmute the Master 1 and the PCM 1 channel.

Also, muting the ADC & DAC channels resulted in aplay not working for me. I suspect other stuff won't work either. I did find that putting both channels at 40% resulted in better PCM quality as 100%

About the multiplexing stuff, the cs46xx chipset normally can handle 31 simultanious connections on /dev/dsp (or so I read :-)). Off course, if you use something like openAL or that, and it doesn't handle more then one connection properly it will crash. I don't know what Quake 3 and Flash use, but I presume they don't write to /dev/dsp directly...
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong please ;-)

edit: Who would want to play flash and Q3 at the same time anyway? ;-)

When I compiled alsarc7 and rebooted I got module mismatch errors on boot but they were not in dmesg so I couldn't look at them twice. Is there anything special that I need to do after emerging alsarc7 like edit /etc/modules.d/alsa or update-modules etc? I have the problem of no bass at the moment on an Altec Lansing ADA995 5.1 with turtle beach santa cruz and am considering changing to SBLive 5.1 Digital if this does not work out.

Code:
# Alsa 0.9.X kernel modules' configuration file.
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/media-sound/alsa-driver/files/alsa-modules.c
onf-rc,v 1.1 2002/12/21 06:31:52 agenkin Exp $

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
# Custom portion

options snd-cs46xx snd_index=0 snd_mmap_valid=1 snd-pcm-oss

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1

Now that I've downgraded to alsarc6 I still get errors on boot although sound does work without bass. Once again, these errors or anything about alsa was absent from dmesg. Any help would be appreciated.

in rc6 the bass is missing for 46xx cards when both stereo channels are at same level
try restarting alsa ..
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart
and post the errors

Hey! I just tried rc7, and I FINALLY have Bass!!! :D

Plus, for the longest time, the audio from my front two speakers seemed to be swapped with my two rear speakers. This has been fixed too!!! (( It's kinda wierd having all of your music being played behind you. :) ))

BTW, I have a Santa Cruz.

Here's the errors I get..... Sound still works tho:
Code:
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:799: warning: name mismatch (IEC 958 Output Switch/IEC958 Output Switch) for control #67
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:799: warning: name mismatch (IEC 958 AC3 Mode Switch/IEC958 Input Switch) for control #68
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:799: warning: name mismatch (IEC 958 Input Switch/IEC958 Input Volume) for control #69
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:886: bad control.69.value type

Should I just remove my /etc/asound.state and let alsactrl make a new one?

yeah that would be a good start,

if you compiled by hand use the alsa start script
but rc7 is in portage now so i would suggest using the rc7 from portage ( it will fix you problms most likely! )

I did use the one from portage, and I think my errors are fixed anyway. When I shut down my system, alsactrl automatically wrote the config file, saving my settings. I think it fixed it's own errors since the problem was only in loading up the old version.

I'm using ALSA from CVS. I also have bass (need to be slightly amplified, however), but the center and rear speakers so not work, and there is a slight hissing noise in the background of some sounds, and constant hissing from the center speaker.

Hello

Has anyone tried Alsa 0.9.1 with Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and got bass *and* concurrent sound? My problems are as below.

Kernel - bass but no concurrent sound
Alsa - concurrent sound but no bass

I'm looking for 5.1 concurrent sound with bass. Please post your findings using Alsa 0.9.1 with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card; it is available on alsa site and unstable portage tree.

Many thanks.
