USB Display link- Need FB_UDL? Monitor Won't Get a Signal

I am trying to get my usb display link to work. In 3.14.14-gentoo, I enabled display link driver and I enabled DRM_UDL. Do I need to enable Displaylink USB Framebuffer support even if it is going to be running in X? I can't get the monitor to get a signal, although it does show up in lsusb. In addition, it's a nightmare enableing FB_UDL and I have not been able to successfully enable it in the kernel.
